Which Treat Is Healthier For You: Wine Or A Brownie?

Losing weight is all about balance and moderation. Most of us try really hard to eat healthy during the week, packing and meal prepping our lunches and then whipping up healthy dinners as we get home. If you're like me, your healthy habits go out the window once the clock strikes 5:00 on Friday. An extra glass of wine with dinner? Why not! Chinese takeout for a Sunday night dinner? Keep those egg rolls coming! If you are to indulge, it's best to do it in moderation. If you're contemplating between drinking a glass of wine or devouring a chocolatey brownie, there IS a healthier option. Here  are some pros and cons of each to help you make an informed decisions if you want to live life to the fullest while also reaching your weight-loss goals.

Team Brownie

According to Woman's Health, chocolate does have health benefits that help to lower blood pressure and fats in the blood. Sadly, the good is outweighed by the high fat and sugar content that is in most brownies. R.D. Kelly Johnson informed us that "an average brownie packs about 14 grams of sugar, and loses most of its nutritional benefits because it is a highly processed food. A typical two-inch brownie has approximately 130 calories, 14 grams of sugar, 22 grams of carbohydrates, five grams of fat, and less than two grams of protein. Oh, man!

Team Wine

Also in moderation, a glass of wine can have positive health effects that can boost immune function and improve flexibility of the blood vessels. Research also shows that red wine's natural compound resveratrol improves blood sugar control, and lowers cholesterol levels in addition to sharpening memory, and promoting anti-cancer effects. A five-ounce glass of red wine also clocks in surprisingly low, at just 125 calories, less than two grams of sugar, four grams of carbohydrates, and zero fat.

The Winner

Team wine is the clear winner here based on calories, fat, sugar ,and carbs! If you can't kick that chocolatey craving, pair a five-ounce glass of wine with dark chocolate that has less than 70% cocoa content so you can get the best of both worlds!
